Vital Suggestions For How To Make An Outline For A Research Paper

We have discussed many times the importance of using an outline when you write a research paper. Today we are going to go over some of the vital suggestions for creating an outline that is easy to write from.

Draw up an outline template, leave a space for each paragraph

In order to create an effective outline you will want to begin with a template. Your template should be laid out with all of the important paragraphs for your research paper. For instance, if you are writing a 5-paragraph research paper then you would want to leave space for 5 paragraphs. It should look like this.

  1. Introduction
  2. Supporting paragraph
  3. Supporting paragraph 2
  4. Supporting paragraph 3
  5. Conclusion

Include 3 supporting points / evidence points for each paragraph:

  1. Introduction
    • 1st point
    • 2nd point
    • 3rd point
  2. Supporting paragraph
    • 1st point
    • 2nd point
    • 3rd point
  3. Supporting paragraph
    • 1st point
    • 2nd point
    • 3rd point
  4. Supporting paragraph
    • 1st point
    • 2nd point
    • 3rd point
  5. Supporting paragraph
    • 1st point
    • 2nd point
    • 3rd point
  6. Conclusion
    • 1st point
    • 2nd point
    • 3rd point

Plan to tie together the last point on each to the first point off the next sentence like this:

  1. Introduction
  2. 1st point
  3. 2nd point
  4. 3rd point
  5. Lead in to 1st point of 1st supporting paragraph

This strategy will help make you research paper flow together better. It will also assure that your related ideas are connecting.

Have a mini-outline for for your thesis

This will help you prepare a great thesis for your introduction. A thesis outline should include a statement and then an explanation

“Writing a research paper is much easier if you begin with a simple outline, we can prove this by looking at the composition of a high grade earning paper that was originally written from an outline.”

The mini outline looks like this:

  1. Statement
  2. How?
  3. Introduce main supporting points.

  4. Depending on what you are researching you may also want to include a hypothesis about what you believe you will find out from your research.

  5. What do you think you will learn?
  6. Initially, writing an outline for your research paper may seem like a simple task. However, if you wish to write a great paper you should follow these simple outlining suggestions. Doing so, will make your essay easier to read and help to assure that it is properly laid out.
